How do smells affect the brain?

Neuroscience has uncovered the mechanisms behind the deep connection between smell and memory, revealing a connection with evolutionary roots. Sandeep Robert Datta, a professor of neurobiology at Harvard Medical School, studies how animals, including humans, use their senses to navigate and interpret the world. He explains that our ancient ancestors used their sense of smell to create mental maps of their surroundings and recall past experiences. “You can think of the primitive brain as having a sense of smell plus a sense of navigation plus a sense of memory,” Datta explains. “That explains why all of these structures are so tightly connected, and why olfactory memories are so evocative.”

Datta continues to emphasize the major role of smell in human cognition and emotion, despite the fact that our sense of smell is less developed than that of other animals. “It is now clear that while our sense of smell is not as robust as that of a mouse or a bloodhound, it is deeply connected to our cognitive centers, our emotional centers, and our memory centers,” he says. “We rely on it to feel well and centered in the world.”

The human nose contains hundreds of specialized olfactory receptors, each designed to interact with specific molecules. When these molecules enter the nose, they bind to their respective receptors, triggering a reaction that Datta likens to “a key being put in a lock.” This process activates olfactory sensory neurons, which sends signals to different areas of the brain. Unlike other sensory information, such as sight and sound, which must first pass through the thalamus before reaching the brain’s emotional and memory centers, the olfactory system is located close to these areas. As Datta notes, the olfactory system “essentially evolved to connect information to these memory and emotional centers.”

This unique connection helps explain why surveys shows that memories triggered by smell are often more emotionally charged and tend to go back further in time than memories evoked by other senses. The smell signals pass through the olfactory bulb, a cluster of nerves responsible for processing odors, before reaching key areas of the brain: the piriform cortex, which identifies odors; the amygdala, which processes emotions; and the hippocampus, which stores and organizes memories. If the hippocampus judges the smell to be important—for example, when it is associated with a particular emotional experience— will it save the memory, so that it can be recalled in the long term. Even many years later, a familiar scent can evoke the same intense emotions and vivid memories as the original experience.

Venkatesh Murthy, head of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard, also discusses this connection. He reiterates that odor signals travel rapidly to the limbic system, which includes the amygdala and hippocampus, regions crucial for processing emotions and memories. This rapid access to emotion and memory centers further strengthens the emotional strength of scent-related memories.

It is clear that the human sense of smell is closely linked to our emotions, memories and general well-being. The evolutionary development of this connection highlights its importance in helping us navigate the world and recall past experiences. What are essential oils?

Essential oils are concentrated compounds extracted from plants that capture the natural scent and flavor, or “essence,” of the plant. Each essential oil has a unique scent due to the different aromatic compounds it contains. There are several methods for extracting these oils, the most common being steam or water distillation and cold pressing.

In steam or water distillation, hot steam or water is passed through the plant material, extracting the essential compounds. In cold pressing, the plant material, such as lemon peel, is mechanically pressed to release the oils. After extraction, the essential oils are often mixed with a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba oil, to create a product that is safe and ready to use. It is important to note that essential oils created through synthetic processes are not considered true essential oils.

The extraction process requires a large amount of plant material, which often makes some essential oils quite expensive. For example, it takes around 225 kg of lavender flowers to produce just 1 kg. lavender essential oil, and 4.500 kg of rose petals or lemon balm to get just 1 kg of their respective oils. This high demand for raw materials contributes to the price of some essential oils.

The history of aromatherapy

Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years in various ancient cultures, including China, India and Egypt. These civilizations used aromatic plant-based substances such as resins, balsams, and oils for both medicinal and spiritual purposes. Distillation of essential oils is often attributed to the Persians in the 10th century, but the practice probably predates them. 

In the 19th century, French doctors began to recognize the therapeutic benefits of essential oils in treating illness. The term “aromatherapy” was coined by French perfumer and chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé in his 1937 book on the subject. Gattefossé’s interest in essential oils grew after he discovered the healing properties of lavender in treating burns, leading to further exploration of their medicinal potential.

How do essential oils improve health?

When applied to the skin, some of the plant-based chemicals in essential oils can be absorbed into the body. It is thought that certain application methods, such as using heat or applying the oils to specific areas, may increase absorption. However, more research is needed to fully understand how different application techniques affect the effectiveness of essential oils. In general, essential oils should not be ingested, as their chemical compounds can have unpredictable effects on the body.

However, the limbic system also regulates unconscious bodily functions such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. Therefore, essential oils have the potential to affect physical processes and provide benefits such as relaxation or improved mood.

  • Improving sleep quality: lavender oil is particularly known for improving sleep quality. A study from 2020 showed that both lavender and peppermint oil helped improve sleep quality in people with heart disease compared to a control group that used aromatic distilled water. Another review from 2014, which reviewed 15 studies, confirmed that lavender oil positively affected sleep. Oils like chamomile and lavender are often used to promote relaxation and better sleep.

  • Improvement of skin problems: Lemongrass essential oil has natural astringent properties that help fight acne by acting antimicrobially and removing dead skin cells. Ylang-ylang oil can also help inhibit skin pigmentation according to a study from 2015. Tea tree oil is also a popular natural remedy for acne-prone skin.   • Diffuse them: One of the most popular ways to use essential oils is through diffusion, a form of aromatherapy. Simply mix essential oils with water in an essential oil diffuser, which disperses fine particles of the oil into the air for you to inhale. Be sure to follow the instructions on your diffuser for the correct oil to water ratio. Other aromatherapy methods include:
    • Direct inhalation: Open the bottle and take a few deep breaths of the aroma to enjoy its benefits.
    • Dry evaporation: Put a few drops of essential oil on a cotton pad and inhale the aroma as it evaporates.
